What is a pelvic examination?
FAQ

A pelvic exam is performed to evaluate the female reproductive tract that includes the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. A medical professional examines the vaginal area and performs a Pap smear to check for signs of cervical cancer, infection or other problems.

Next, the medical professional will manually examine the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. This procedure will check for any abnormal lumps or tenderness.

The entire pelvic examination only takes a few minutes, and while it can be uncomfortable, it is generally not painful. All women who are sexually active or over age 21 should have regular pelvic exams and Pap smears.
